What is Mastery Assessment?

At Phoenix , Mastery Assessment is how we make learning clear, meaningful, and fair. Instead of “one-and-done” grades, students work toward a defined mastery standard for each skill or concept. Teachers give feedback, and students are expected to revise until their work shows they understand.

Rather than accepting work that shows misunderstanding, incomplete work, or a zero as the final outcome, we focus on learning. If an assignment is missing or not yet meeting the mastery standard, students are expected to complete it and/or revise it.

Students are supported at school through class time, Academic Options (AO), and Learning Extensions so missing or not-yet-mastered work gets finished and improved.

Mastery Assessment means:
• Teachers set a clear mastery standard for an assignment (what “meeting the goal” looks like).
• Students submit work, get feedback, and revise if needed.
• Progress is based on evidence of learning, not just points earned.

Mastery isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing you understand the skill or concept well enough to move forward confidently.

Why this helps middle school students

Middle school is a time when students are building habits that matter for high school (and life). Mastery Assessment supports this by:

• Focusing on understanding, not point-chasing.
• Making expectations clear (“here’s the target”).
• Teaching students how to use feedback and revise.
• Building perseverance when learning is challenging.
• Supporting fairness and consistency by using shared standards for success.

How families see progress: the Mastery Assessment Portal (M.A.P.)

The Mastery Assessment Portal (M.A.P.) is Phoenix Middle School’s online system that helps families and students stay informed about learning progress in a mastery-based program. Instead of emphasizing points or averages, M.A.P. provides a clear, up-to-date view of how a student is doing across classes by organizing assignments and feedback around learning goals, highlighting areas of strength and areas that may need revision or additional support. It also helps families monitor work habits and related school eligibility items in one place, so everyone can partner effectively in supporting growth over time.

Read our Mastery Assessment Manual

We strongly encourage every family to read the Mastery Assessment Manual. It explains:

  • What “mastery-based assessment” means at Phoenix and why we use it
  •  How mastery standards and learning goals connect to daily classwork and assignments
  •  How to use the Mastery Assessment Portal (M.A.P.) to view progress and feedback
  •  What the different M.A.P. categories mean (and how to interpret what you see)
  •  How revisions and re-assessments work when a student is still developing a skill
  •  How academic progress and work habits/behaviors are reported separately and why that matters
