How Phoenix Works

Phoenix was intentionally designed from the start with middle schoolers in mind, and we keep refining what we do based on research, reflection, and what works best for kids.

Everything we do, from how classes run to how we support students, is guided by two connected ideas:

  • Phoenix Pillars describe the qualities we’re helping students develop.

  • Our Ten Common Principles describe the day-to-day commitments we make as a school so those qualities can actually grow.

Think of the Pillars as the “why” and the Principles as the “how"

Phoenix Pillars  (What we develop in students)

All components of the Phoenix program are intentionally designed to align with our foundational Phoenix Pillars.

Graduation Cap

Intellectual Discipline: Developing thoughtful, reflective learners who analyze problems, weigh evidence, and question assumptions. It’s about building strong habits of mind that lead to clear, fair, and accurate thinking.

Globe

Global Awareness: Encouraging students to see beyond themselves, respect diverse perspectives, and recognize the interconnectedness of people and systems worldwide. This fosters empathy, responsibility, and a sense of belonging to a larger community.

Pen

Creative Expression: Valuing imagination, innovation, and originality as ways to explore ideas and show understanding. Students are encouraged to take risks, use their voice in authentic, meaningful ways.

Yoga

Wellness: Nurturing the whole student - mind, body, and spirit. This means fostering balance, resilience, and strong relationships so students grow not only academically but also socially and emotionally.

Star

Character: Instilling integrity, empathy, and responsibility. Students practice making ethical choices, treating others with respect, and contributing positively to their communities.

Phoenix Middle Ten Common Principles  (How we operate as a school)

Phoenix Middle School is grounded in the Common Principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools, a national organization whose work shaped student-centered, equitable school design for more than thirty years. Although the Coalition formally concluded its work in 2017, its principles continue to guide schools committed to meaningful learning, strong relationships, and fairness for all students. At Phoenix, these principles remain central to how we design learning and care for our community, reflecting what we believe students deserve every day.

Our Commitments

  1. We believe learning means using your mind well.
We design learning around thinking by asking good questions, making sense of evidence, and clearly explaining ideas.

  2. We focus on depth, not just getting through content.
We prioritize essential skills and understandings and give students the time they need to practice, revise, and truly learn.

  3. We hold high expectations for every student.
Our goals apply to all learners, and we provide different pathways and supports so each student can meet those expectations.

  4. We personalize learning so students are known and supported.
We use our time, relationships, and learning design to respond to students’ strengths, needs, and interests.

  5. We treat students as active learners and teachers as coaches.
Students do the thinking and the work while teachers guide, model, confer, and provide feedback that helps students grow.

  6. We measure learning by what students can do with what they know.
Students demonstrate understanding through real tasks and multiple forms of evidence, and they receive additional support when they are not there yet.

  7. We build a school culture grounded in trust, fairness, and belonging.
We expect a lot and support a lot so students feel safe taking academic risks, learning from mistakes, and being themselves.

  8. We act like one school team.
Every adult shares responsibility for the success and well-being of every student, not only the students on their roster.

  9. We dedicate our time and resources to strong teaching and deep learning.
We make thoughtful choices about schedules, materials, and adult collaboration based on what best supports student learning.

  10. We practice democracy and pursue equity every day.
We include student and family voices in the life of the school, honor diversity as a strength, and work intentionally to remove barriers so every student has access to success.

These Pillars and Principles show up in everyday ways: in the questions we ask, the feedback we give, the relationships we build, and the support students receive when learning gets hard. If you’d like to see how this looks in classes and schedules, visit our Academics & Learning page.
